Mt. Baker Climb to Fight Breast Cancer ~ June 27th-29th, 2003
AT 8AM ON SUNDAY, JUNE 29TH WE REACHED THE SUMMIT OF MT. BAKER!!!
Dear Friends, Family, & Colleagues, This summer I will team up with a group of climbers formed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to participate in a unique event called Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. I will attempt to summit Mt. Baker, and in doing so, will raise crucial funds and awareness for breast cancer research. All proceeds will benefit the Hutchinson Center. In its first five years, the Climb has raised almost $500,000 for breast cancer research, while generating much needed awareness about the disease. This year we hope to raise $210,000! Each member of my summit team is responsible for raising a minimum of $3,000 for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. By sponsoring me, you will support the Hutch’s fight to eliminate breast cancer. I am asking for pledges based on the height of Mt. Baker at 10,781 ft. I need to raise 30 cents for every foot I climb on Mt. Baker. If you were to contribute $100.00 that would get me 333 ft. closer to the summit of Mt. Baker. I need your support to reach the summit; I can not do it on my own. All donors giving $150 or more will receive a Climb to Fight Breast Cancer T-Shirt as a token of appreciation for your support. All donors giving $300 or more will receive a Climb T-shirt, as well as an embroidered Climb baseball cap. Please make your check payable to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), but mail it directly to me, as I am committed to raising the minimum of $3,000.00 to participate in the climb. My deadline for donations is May 15th, 2003. Mt. Baker is a heavily glaciated dormant volcano located in the North Cascade Mountains of Northern Washington. At 10,781 ft., Mt. Baker is unique with respect to its great mass of snow and ice – with 12 active glaciers exceeding 20 square miles. The route we will attempt follows the Easton Glacier. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is on the forefront of breast cancer research. It relies on the private sector to bring in dollars for scientists to develop cutting edge studies. Traditional funding, such as from the National Institutes of Health, typically does not support these initial research projects. Funds raised through special events provide seed money for Hutchinson Center scientists and researchers to launch new studies. This seed money enables scientists to develop preliminary findings, a necessary first step before they are eligible to compete for large-scale research awards. Proceeds from the 2003 Climb to Fight Breast Cancer will directly benefit these types of breast cancer studies, called pilot studies, at the Hutch. For more information on the Fred Hutchinson Research Center visit their website at www.fhcrc.org. With your help, and the ongoing work of Hutchinson Center scientists, we will be one step closer to eliminating breast cancer as a cause of human suffering and death. Be sure to include your email on the attached donor sheet. I will be sending weekly updates on my progress. Thank you for your support and happy spring! Warmest Regards, Christian Silk |
